In 1998 Calendar Club opened the first 12 of their temporary stores in the UK. This year they celebrate their 15th season, opening more than 300 stores on the high street and in shopping centres across the UK and Ireland from September to January. As a short term retailer Calendar Club operate an unusual, but highly successful business model, with store operators running their own stores each year with the help of a well established permanent team. The UK operation is also part of a larger international family with sister companies in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, boasting roughly 1,000 seasonal shops.
In July 2011, Calendar Club, together with the Otter House Group of companies, moved into a 150,000 sq. ft. distribution centre, housing the main warehouse and offices, based in Exeter, Devon. The majority of the 55 full-time staff members work from the Exeter HQ, with Property Director Bill Nettelfield, National Sales Manager Steve Jones and a further 9 Territory Managers, out on the road, ready to provide help with store builds, health and safety issues and the general day-to-day administration of the business throughout the season.
Calendar Club have an esteemed reputation amongst shopping centre landlords, due to their ability to turnaround store and mall unit builds within a 48 hour period. 2011 landlord feedback includes comments such as ‘An excellent Christmas temp letting which added to our overall customer offer …’ (Paul Jackson, Commercial Manager, Banbury Castle Quay) and ‘We always welcome the arrival (of Calendar Club) … over Christmas – shoppers love the stand!’ (Charlotte Jarrett, Marketing Manager, Gloucester Eastgate).
2012 is set to be another action packed season for Calendar Club with the launch of new venture ‘The Present People’, an additional string to the Calendar Club bow. The opening of 10-15 temporary stores offering a broad range of gifts including puzzles, games and gadgets, will further enhance the presence of the group on the high street during the Christmas season. As Calendar Club move towards the new season it must be asked, who will be the next New Moon (2010) or One Direction (2012)? Between them these two bestselling titles sold over 100,000 units. We'll just have to see which popular band, film or football club is in vogue come December.
